Baby Headbands

Recently, I have been creating baby headbands more than before. Because of this, I'm thinking that people haven't realized that I do these as well. Below are a few photos of some headbands that I've created. The flowers are on separate barrettes and can be removed from the headbands posted below.

The headband above features a Red Poppy, with a white ribbon wrapped barrette and a white headband.

The hand painted Tea Rose headband above is available in a wide variety of colors. If you're interested in a different color combination email me (tanya.hofford@flauxers.com) for more information. Pictured above, the white Tea Roses are hand painted to also have just a kiss of grapevine purple color around the edges, attached to a purple ribbon wrapped barrette and a lavender headband.

Pictured here is 3 pink Hydrangea, embellished with Swarovski crystal beads, attached to a pink ribbon wrapped barrette, and includes a white headband. There are several color options for the Hydrangeas as well. And this item, as with all of these can be customized to fit your tastes.

This large purple Rose is attached to a purple ribbon wrapped barrette and comes with the lavender headband.

Real flowers are great too...

Often times, brides want real flowers in their bouquet on their big day instead of artificial ones. My opinion is that this sounds great! Every Bride needs to remember that this is HER big day. All that matters is that she picks items and makes plans to please herself and her future marital partner, no one else.

The only drawback to using real flowers in your bridal bouquet is that they are usually wilted and gone by the time you get back from your honeymoon. BUT, if photos of your bouquet are provided to Flauxers, we can generally create a bouquet replica, using artificial flowers (availability of the flowers may cause some hiccups, but we'll do everything we can to create a replica for you).

Pictured below are photos of the original and replica bouquets from the June 2011 Wedding featured in this blog. There are some minor differences, but the bride recognized the bouquet the moment that she saw it, and was so pleased to have a bouquet to remind her of her wedding day.

If you are a bride, or want to give the bride something special to remember her big day by, and real flowers have been chosen for the bridal bouquet, we can still create a bouquet replica that can be kept for years and years to come.

My Wedding - Blast From The Past

All of this talk about weddings has me thinking about my own. It's been a little over 5 years and my floral design style has evolved (for the better), but I wanted to share some photos of flowers from that special day.

I'm a very colorful person, and it wouldn't have been my wedding had I not shown color in every possible way. Plus, being that my favorite color is orange, and my favorite flower is the Tiger Lily, I knew that these items needed to be a focus, but I didn't want to go over the top.

Each of my girls wore a different color, and each of their bouquets had accent colors/flowers to match that color, and the groomsmen that were paired with them wore the same color/flower boutonniere as their accent color/flower.

My color/flower was obviously an orange Tiger Lily...

My first maid of honor's color/flower was the red Ginger Lily...

The second maid of honor's color/flower was a blue Forget-me-not...

The 3rd bridesmaid's color/flower was a yellow Narcissus...

The 4th bridesmaid's color/flower was a purple Orchid...

For the church, I wanted something simple, that continued with my color palette, and the tropical theme that we had decided upon. So for the church pews, we decided it would be appropriate, and fun to use multi-color Hawaiian Leis.

It's really hard to believe that it's already been 5 years since our "big day", but I still would have picked the same flowers (though the arrangements that I'd make today would look different, as I prefer my style now), and I love that I still have MY bouquet from my wedding. I also love that at least one of my bridesmaids still has her bouquet and it's proudly displayed in her home.

I hope that if one day I have a daughter, she'll play wedding with my bouquet and my husband's boutonniere!

June 2011 Wedding

My brother-in-law found an amazing girl that is absolutely perfect for him! They recently got married, and I'm so happy to have her as part of the family. When they asked me to assist with pew, church and reception decorations, I was elated.

My now sister-in-law was a do-it-yourself bride in a lot of ways, and helped me put together these amazing pieces. She has amazing taste and together we were able to create the attached amazing pieces.

Congratulations to the happy couple! I hope to be able to enjoy family dinners with you for many, many years to come.

Going forward, as I do more weddings, I plan to post the step by step creations like I did for the wedding last June (only a year ago). I feel that this is a great light into my creative process and hope that everyone enjoys seeing this as I do.

December Wedding 2010

I was asked by a friend to do the bouquets and boutonnières for her December Wedding. Her primary reason for wanting artificial flowers was because of Poinsettia allergy within the wedding party, but they also allowed her to give her bridesmaids something that they could always to remember this special day.

I was unable to attend this wedding due to a scheduling conflict, but the bride has agreed to allow me to post these photos to show the bouquets and boutonnières in action.

An extra special thanks and congratulations to the bride and groom.

Flauxers First Wedding

I have officially completed my first floral wedding (excluding my own of course). It was so much fun to plan and even more to see my finished product at the wedding and the bride's reaction.

This blog post is dedicated to Rene and John - may you have a wonderful life together, filled with happiness that blossoms every day!

While reading the following post and looking at the photos, please remember that as always with Flauxers, all of the flowers pictured are 100% artificial. (Faux + flowers = Flauxers)

The planning:
After being provided with a list of multiple flowers wanted by the bride (Lisianthus, and Lilacs) and the purple, green and cream color palette, I went to work finding the perfect flowers for their big day. Here's a photo of my first round of flowers I purchased for this event:

First round of Centerpieces:
My next step was to create a mock-up of what a centerpiece would look like for the bride and groom to be.

Making of the actual bouquets, centerpieces, boutonnieres, corsages and bobby pins:
After making the requested updates, I began ordering the remaining flowers and started the process of making the final products... This was the state of my Living Room each night, though I picked them all up each night until they were finished.

I had to make a few floral substitutions due to a couple of the flowers that I had originally used being back ordered, but I lucked out and the flower substitutions were prettier and more realistic than the ones I had previously purchased. Here's a photo of 6 of the arrangements on my deck about 1.5 weeks before the wedding.

Packaged and Ready:
It's now the night before the wedding, and all of the items are completed and ready to go. And for the sake of documenting the process, I snapped this photo. There were 5 boxes of arrangements that fit into the trunk of my husband's car very nicely.

Set Up:
The wedding and reception both took place outside, at the same location, so I planned on getting there super early. I arrived around 2 hours early to make sure that the flowers were all set up prior to the guests showing up and since I didn't know how long it would take to set up everything. The set up process went really well and everything was unpacked, placed on the tables and ready to go in about 30 minutes. This gave me plenty of time to take photos and get the bouquets/boutonnieres and corsages in a safe place to give to the bridal party once they arrived. Here are a few photos of the set up.

In this photo, you'll see 2 of the 4 bouquets that I created as well as 2 of the bridesmaids. I love how the colors of the dresses looked with the flowers!

First Dance:
This photo is one of my favorites - it's a photo of the newly married couple during their first dance. You can see the hair pieces and the boutonnieres that I made, but more importantly, you can see how truly happy they are! Congrats again to the amazing couple!

Now this truly surprised me and quite honestly made my day... I have said many times before that the "Flowers look so real you have to touch them!", but when even when bees are fooled (with out any fragrances added to the arrangements used at the wedding), the truth in that statement really shines through!

April Birth Flower

April is often thought of as a month when the weather starts getting warmer, and rain starts to replace the no longer appreciated snow that we've been faced with all winter. April is often a time when flowers begin to bloom and people begin to enjoy being outside more again. That's why I think that it's very appropriate that the Birth Flower for April is a cheerful, and beautiful, yet simple one... the Daisy.

The word Daisy is derived from the old English words, 'Day's Eye,' and is often associated with innocence, simple beauty, purity and never-ending love. Like the Sunflower, the bloom of a Daisy is not considered to be a single flower. Instead, it is consisted of 2 types, the white petals (ray florets) and the yellow centers (disk florets). Daisies are most commonly known as being a white and yellow flower, but sometimes the white petals are a slight shade of pink. These annually blooming, or perennial flowers are one of the most commonly sold flowers in the US.

When planting Daisies, be sure to use fertilizer and cover them in a thick layer or mulch or other material in the winter months to keep the bulbs from getting too cold.

Daisy leaves are also edible. Other edible members of the Daisy 'family' are lettuce and Dandelions, so don't be surprised to see them listed on a menu at your favorite restaurant.

Friday Flower Fact - March Birth Flower

I apologize for the lack of posts so far this month, and because of the lack of posts, I am posting this on a Tuesday night instead of Friday. Hope you enjoy!

As you all know, once a month, I write about the birth flower for that month. The March Birth flower is the Daffodil. Daffodils, also known as Narcissus are one of the first signs of spring. Also, depending on the species, these delicate flowers can sometimes be found blooming in the late fall. Daffodils are most well known of their rich yellow color, but also bloom in yellow/white, yellow/orange, white/orange, pink, and even lime green.

When planting Daffodils in your garden, be sure to plant the bulbs in a well drained location. Daffodils are perennials and once planted, should be divided once every 5-10 years. After the blooms have fallen off, do NOT cut the foliage/stems from these flowers until they've turned a yellow-ish color. It is then recommended that you dig up the bulbs, cut the stems and rinse them in water. Once this is done, they should be stored in a cool, dry location so they are ready to plant between September and November. If you do not unsoil the bulbs, the flowers will still grow next year and you should still wait to remove the stems until they have turned the yellow-ish color mentioned above.

The American Cancer Society has adopted these flowers as a "symbol of hope." Check out the ACS website to find a location near you that's selling Daffodils for this cause. Not only will you be helping this amazing organization, but you'll be bringing spring into your home/office.

Flauxers Flower Fact Friday - Tulips

Spring is almost here, daylight is starting to last longer, the weather is starting to get warmer, and the birds that have flown south for the winter are returning. Soon we will begin to see the first signs that winter is over, with spring flowers growing and blooming. One of my favorite spring flowers is the Tulip. Much like the rose, different colored tulips have different symbolization/meanings. Tulips as a whole are often thought to symbolize fame, passion, imagination, and a declaration of love.

Multi-colored or Variegated Tulips - Beauty (especially beautiful eyes)

I'm a big fan of food, so I always find it interesting when I stumble upon edible flowers/floral greens. Did you know that Tulip bulbs are edible? If you're needing onions for a recipe, Tulip bulbs can be used in their place. One major problem for me about this replacement is that you'll have one less of these colorful and beautiful flowers in your garden each spring.

Flower Fact Friday: Forget-me-nots

I can't believe that another week has come and gone. Even though the daylight hours are getting longer, they're still flying by.

One of my favorite flowers, both because of the bold colors and because they're low-lying flowers, allowing you to arrange your flower gardens with other flowers and pops of color as well, is the Forget-me-not. Honestly, I think part of my fondness from this flower probably comes from their name - it in itself makes me smile.

Forget-me-nots are the state flower of Alaska, and often symbolize true love, and memories. Blooming in the spring, these blue and sometimes dark purple flowers are considered a wild flower, but are often planted in gardens/flower beds because people are drawn to their simple beauty. If you choose to plant Forget-me-nots, be sure to have them in a moisture rich environment. These beautiful flowers will continue to grow every spring once they have been established in a garden.

Flauxer Fact Friday - February Birth Flower

Another month has gone by and it's time to discuss the Birth Flower for February. Being born in February myself, I was really interested to find out that there are two February Birth Flowers - the Primrose and the Violet. This is especially close to my heart as the first flower I remember having of my own, given to to me by my Grandmother was a violet. I was so proud to have it and did a wonderful job at keeping it blossoming and beautiful. Knowing now that it had more meaning, even if she hadn't realized it, than her teaching me about flowers, makes me indescribably happy.

The primrose is the earliest of Spring flowers to bloom, much like a preview of the warm weather and beautiful colors/flowers to come in the next few months. They are low-lying plants that often grow in forests. The ideal soil conditions are moist, slightly dry, and they don't 'like' clay based soils. The main color of Primroses is a pale yellow, with a darker center. These gorgeous signs of warmer weather are also great tasting. The leaves of this plan are sometimes used in teas and the flowers as a salad garnish.

Violets come in a wide variety of colors, including white, yellow and deep purple. These beautiful blossoms were thought by the Ancient Greeks to symbolize love and fertility, and were often used to create Love Potions. Violets bloom in the spring and fall, and make great house plants. If growing Violets, be sure to keep them in a cool location with plenty of direct sunlight, with periods of shade.

Friday Flower Fact - January Birth Flower

I'm so sorry for the lack of posts since before the holidays. I had every intention of posting, just on different days of the week, only I couldn't fit it in. That being said, I hope that everyone's new year has been going well and that 2010 is a wonderful year!

Now, back to my routine..... ;)

Since, I generally do the Birth Flower posts the first Friday of the month, and that I've missed the first 2 Fridays of this month, I'm going to pick up there. The January Birth Flower is the Carnation. The scientific name of this flower is Dianthus caryophyllus. Dianthus means flower of the gods or flower of love, depending upon the translation being used. Much like the Rose, the symbolism or meaning behind the Carnation varies by color.

Flower Fact Friday - Poinsettia

Can you believe it's Friday again already? Throughout the week, I've thought - Oh, it's only Tuesday (Wednesday, etc.), I have plenty of time to figure out what I'm going to write about on Friday. But then today came and is passing quickly, and I just realized (at almost 6:15 PM) that I still haven't posted my fact for this week. I also had plans of trying to evolve my Friday posts to not be solely focused around a specific flower, but in maintaining flowers, complimenting colors/flowers etc. Well, I can't think of a specific way that I want to do that, as I want to keep with the season we're in. And though it's technically Fall/Autumn, it feels more like winter here and I've began automatically associating December (as a whole) as being winter.

Also, as an FYI - Keep an eye out for the Friday posts to be on different days in the upcoming weeks... :) But everything will be back to normal after the beginning of the year.

Now on to the Friday Flower Fact.....

Poinsettias are most commonly known as a small potted flower, that blossoms in December. These small plants are actually trees that can reach heights of 12+ feet, with large leaves, measuring up to 8 inches across. Poinsettias are often thought to be poisonous, but in 1971, this was proven false. It is not recommended that you this plant though, as you may have stomach irritation. Children and pets can also choke on this plant, if consumed, so always keep out of their reach.

Here's something really interesting, that I just happened to stumble upon... Tomorrow, December 12 is National Poinsettia Day in the United States. I don't think I could have planned this flower fact for a better day! This day was chosen, because Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first to introduce the flower the United States died on December 12, 1851.

So now, I say we all celebrate the holiday, National Poinsettia Day by purchasing something containing this beautiful plant. Don't forget that I have Poinsettia items in my etsy shop, artfire shop and my website - *wink, wink*

Flower Fact Friday - December Birth Flower

Today I'm featuring Holly, the December Birth Flower. Along with being a beautiful decoration, most commonly known for use during the December holidays, Holly is the state tree of Delaware. Holly bushes are dioecious, meaning that there is a female and a male version of the plant. The female Holly needs to be within several feet of the male Holly in order to bear the beautiful red berries. If the female bush doesn't have the male bush within the proper proximity, it will continue to grow, but will not produce berries.

It's also not a good idea to eat Holly berries, even though you may see birds or other animals snacking on them. Holly berries, are mildly poisonous to humans, and the symptoms of minor ingestion are much like a stomach virus. When used in controlled amounts, extracts of Holly have been used as many home remedies, a little surprising considering their ability to make you sick. It is not recommended that people ingest any form of Holly, but I found this information interesting.

Flower Fact Friday - Cornucopia

Seeing as how it's the day after Thanksgiving, I thought todays fact should be an autumn seasonal piece. Though they are not often filled with flowers, but with fruits and vegetables, my version of the Cornucopia is a floral piece, that's the perfect table or stand decoration for any home.

Also known as the horn of plenty or the harvest cone, the cornucopia is a symbol often associated with harvest/food or an abundance. The cornucopia comes from Greek Mythology. One tale states that Zeus mistakenly broke the horn from a goat that he nursed from as a baby. After feeling badly about doing so, he gave the horn back to her, with the power of granting the possessor anything they desired. Zeus also gave this mystical horn to kings as a Thank you.

If you do not have one already, make sure you fill your home with abundance next holiday season by placing a Cornucopia on your table as a centerpiece.

Flower Fact Friday - Sunflowers

Wow! This week went by really fast, and I just realized that I still hadn't written my Flower Fact yet. As a side note, I hope to soon be announcing Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales - so keep your eyes open.

This week's flower fact is about the Sunflower, the fastest growing plant and the state flower of Kansas. In as little as 6 months, Sunflowers can grow to be 3-18 feet tall. The bloom or head of the Sunflower is actually made up of hundreds or thousands of individual flowers, with each 'pedal' being a single flower that doesn't seed. These incredible flowers also 'follow' the sun as it travels across the sky each day. After the sun has set, the Sunflower prepares for dawn by slowly moving back into it's natural position, with the head pointing East.

Sunflowers as a food:

Sunflower seeds are often used as birdseed, but are also edible to humans. They make a quick and delicious snack, and can act as a substitute for nuts. Sunflower oils are used in cooking, and are often used as an alternative to vegetable, corn or olive oil. In fact, there are many large manufacturers of Potato Chips that use Sunflower Oil for baking or frying their snacks.

Their beauty and and nutritional value make Sunflowers both practical and ideal for your home and yard decor.

Friday Flower Fact

In an attempt to make my blog more active and interesting, I'm going to start a 'Friday Flower Fact'. It may be something you already know, or something completely random. The fact will be about real or artificial flowers and may adapt as time progresses. That being said, our 'Friday Flower Fact' for today is:

Every month has a birth flower, much like the birth stone. The November birth flower is the Chrysanthemum and is said to symbolize joy and optimism.

Original Chrysanthemums were a yellow or golden color. Greek words 'Chrys' meaning Golden and 'anthemion' meaning flower were combined to name it. The Chrysanthemum can now be found in a range of colors, with white, red and yellow being the most popular. Often times, the centers of the bushy blossoms are a golden color. There are both perennial and annual Chrysanthemums, making them convenient for multiple landscaping and decorating needs. This flower is versatile and easy to grow in multiple climates, even though it originated as a tropical plant.

In addition to their beauty, Chrysanthemums petals are sometimes used to make tea. This tea is used by some as a remedy for congestion, to aid in lung strengthening or to reduce fevers, among other medicinal purposes.

If you're looking for an extra special gift for someone born in November, give them Chrysanthemums and show just how much you care.

Flauxers Update

I just realized that I haven't posted in a while, so I decided that I'd give you an update on what's going on with Flauxers. I am in the process of ordering boxes and shipping supplies, and have finally found boxes that will hold my wreaths. Once I get these boxes, expect to see more wreaths on my website and in my Etsy shop. I also have been looking at more 'miniature' flowers to make earrings/hair pieces from, and flowers that I want to use for a cornucopia and pumpkin basket that I recently purchased. So that being said, there are a lot of seasonal arrangements on the way - and will hopefully be out sometime in October.

I have had multiple people ask about baby headbands, and I have listened. Baby headbands are on there way, and they will also soon be seen on my website and in my Etsy shop. Be sure to keep an eye out for these.

I've also recently received multiple pointers on how to approach local businesses to see if they are interested in selling my products in their store. There are several places in State College that I'm going to be approaching once I get a flyer/brochure completed, outlining all of my items. I'll update everyone again once I have those ready (I'm not exactly sure how I want to lay them out yet, so it maybe a while), and then again if any local places are interested.

One last update, I've asked to be in a 'SAMPLE' box being listed by a fellow Etsy shop. As I get more information, including if I'll be featured, I'll let everyone know - so you can be sure to get your box!

Etsy Treasury

I created my very first Etsy treasury today! I've had the items favorited for over a week now, and kept missing the time by a few seconds. Blogging & Updates

Haha - You can tell I haven't gotten quite acquainted with having a blog, if not from the lack of posts, then from the fact that this post is about blogging. Actually, it's more of an apology to my blog followers, as I haven't posted anything in quite a while. Well, hopefully that's not going to happen again. As I'm new, I have a difficult time coming up with something new to write/talk about every day, and I am up for any suggestions you may have to help keep me on track.

A little bit about what's happened since my last post:

I have been featured in my very first Etsy treasury! I know - How exciting, right!?!?! It expires on Thursday, but can be found here: http://www.etsy.com/treasury_list.php?room_id=78063. I still get excited just thinking about it!!! A little like how I dance around my living room every time I make a sale, on my website, or via any other means (ie: etsy).

I also have ordered my first round of flowers from a different wholesale company (because they had miniature sunflowers), and I received them via UPS yesterday. They are perfect and the quality is amazing. I'm planning on working on new accessories today, and can't be more excited!

That about sums up the 'bigger picture' of things, and I'm going to try really hard to keep updating at least once a week. As stated above, I'm up for any suggestions on how to keep the blog rolling - feel free to comment! :)

First Etsy Sale

I made my first sale on Etsy last night and I couldn't be happier. I was so excited that I ended up dancing around the living room and doing a little jig on the couch (while I still had my laptop on my lap). Thankfully nothing was broken and no one was injured during my celebratory events. Now looking back, I'm thinking I should have taken a picture to show you the hilarious nature of my dances. Maybe next time. :)

The jewelry & accessory line seems to be working out. I really enjoy creating the pieces and people seem to like them. I'm looking forward to creating more and can't wait to sell more.

I'm seriously thinking about having a give-away next month, but I need ideas of what people like/don't like before I decide what I will be giving away. Please help!
